The great Paolo Sorrentino has said that he learned to make good movies by watching above all bad movies (Paolo Sorrentino, from the collection: |Sul sof�|, Guida editori, Napoli, 2014, edited by Pietro Gargano).Well, if I had to say what is the best way to make remarkable photo shoots, I would say that it is necessary to see many, lots of ugly pictures: your critical spirit (if any) will be horrified at seeing such wrong, flat, rough, blurry, no-contrast images, where it is almost difficult to catch the subject, and so on.Yet, I am quite sure this is the best way to progress in photography, as well as in cinema.Personally, I feel lucky that I approached photography quite as in the raw. When I was a boy, between eighteen and twenty years, I was burned by a strong photographic passion, which made me decide to become a photographer, and I was about to do so when I switched from a 35 mm Ashai Pentax to a 6x7 format. But, it was just when I was around twenty that there was an incredible turn in my life. I met astrology, almost simultaneously with analytic psychology, yoga, homeopathic medicine, macrobiotics, and many other disciplines. I studied astrology even up to eighteen hours a day, without any interruption, with such a greed that had something pathological with it. I plunged myself in that limitless ocean (today, after forty-six years of |desperate and crazy studies| on this side of the knowable, I realise I know just a few drops of reality in a yet to know universe of things), and I was constrained, with a decision taken at the table, or surgically, if you prefer, to abandon photography. In fact, until three years ago, I did not make a shoot any more, excluded some photos taken with my cell, in very particular occasions. When I began again, with a pocket camera, yet very good one (the RX100 by Sony), I didn't read anything about the subject, I had only some notions of optics, studied within physics many decades before. I threw myself in the street and took pictures; first dozens of pictures a day, then even three thousand with a professional camera.I didn't care about studying critical texts about photography, even though I was not totally stark naked about this art, since as a cinephile and with an elephantine memory, I could describe even the angle of shooting, the light and tracking shot of movies that maybe I saw just one time thirty years ago. Only after at least one year I had been going around taking thousands of photos, I started visiting the few exhibitions in the cities where I lived, and looking with great pleasure the books of photos about the masters of the eightieth art. Then, I realised that I followed instinctively some rules already put in place by the big photographers of the past. I also realised immediately that my passion was and is the street photography.
